Many foods found in our kitchen are extremely dangerous for dogs and cats. Knowing these items can prevent veterinary emergencies and save your pet's life.
Dangerous foods for dogs
Chocolate: contains theobromine, which dogs metabolize slowly. Dark chocolate is the most dangerous. Grapes and raisins: can cause acute kidney failure even in small amounts. Onion and garlic: damage red blood cells, causing anemia. Xylitol: found in chewing gum and sweeteners, causes a sharp drop in blood sugar and liver failure.
Dangerous foods for cats
Lilies: all parts of the plant are extremely toxic to cats and can cause fatal kidney failure. Excessive tuna: can lead to vitamin E deficiency and mercury poisoning. Milk: most adult cats are lactose intolerant.
Signs of poisoning
Vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures, lethargy, and loss of appetite are warning signs. The time between ingestion and symptoms varies from minutes to days, depending on the substance.
What to do
Take the animal to the veterinarian immediately. If possible, bring a sample or photo of the ingested food and estimate the amount consumed. Do not try to induce vomiting without professional guidance.
