How to introduce a new pet to a home with other animals

Introducing a new animal into a home that already has pets requires patience and planning. A poorly conducted introduction can generate lasting conflicts, stress and even aggression between the animals.

Preparation of the environment

Before the arrival of the new pet, prepare a separate space with its own food, water, bed and toys. The resident animal should not feel that its territory has been invaded all at once.

Gradual introduction

Start with exchanging scents: alternate blankets between animals for a few days. Then, allow eye contact through a door or railing. Only then carry out supervised meetings in neutral territory.

Cats and dogs together

The introduction between different species requires even more caution. Ensure that the cat has escape routes and high places that are inaccessible to the dog. Never force interaction — let them approach each other at their own pace.

Signs of success and warning

Playing with breaks, sleeping close together and eating without tension are positive signs. Constant growling, aggressive chasing and food refusal indicate that the process needs to be slowed down.
