Separation anxiety in dogs: signs and solutions

Separation anxiety is one of the most common behavioral disorders in dogs, affecting between 20%% and 40%% of animals seen by behavior specialists. The problem manifests itself when the dog becomes excessively distressed in the absence of its owner.

Warning signs

Symptoms include excessive barking, destruction of furniture and objects, attempts to escape, urination and defecation in inappropriate places, and intense salivation. These behaviors typically occur within the first 30 minutes after the tutor leaves.

Common causes

Changes in routine, such as returning to in-person work after a period at home, are frequent triggers. Dogs adopted from shelters also show a greater predisposition, possibly due to previous experiences of abandonment.

Desensitization techniques

Treatment involves gradual exits: start by leaving the dog alone for a few seconds and progressively increase it. Avoid effusive goodbyes and arrivals. Stuffed toys with treats help create positive associations with your absence.

When to seek professional help

If symptoms persist after weeks of training, consult a veterinary behaviorist. In severe cases, a combination of behavioral therapy and medication may be necessary.
